Northwest Finish Sunrooms - Sunrooms Northwest
Joe Horek & Kevin Borchet Sold Us on a Bill of Goods and Failed to Come Thru

Construction & Repair

Last Fall (Oct) NW Finish Sunrooms, at the Portland Fall Home & Garden Show, sold us a dream, a sunroom/addition to the back of our home. We figured a budget, took out a mortgage for what we determined we could afford, and in good faith signed a contract with Norwest Finish Sunrooms.

After months of promises and lies, from October-05 to March-06, work finally began in April. We were told that the job to put up the shell would take 3 weeks from foundation work to putting on the roof. It is now mid October and the portion of this project that was supposed to be completed by NWFSR is not completed.

Work consisted of low quality materials, inexperienced subcontractors who were not provided the materials they needed to properly do the job, and costly mistakes. The second framers that were hired to do the work were loaned tools to work with by NW Finish Sunrooms. NWFSR had other jobs going on and the owners brother, Mark, would stop by and take the tools to other job sites. This would leave nothing for the sub-contractors to work with on my addition. So the sub-contractors would have to go out and find and rent the tools needed for that day. I went out and bought a saws-all at a cost of $150, so that they could do the framing work.

Our complaints have been mostly not responded to at all, but the responses we have received have been disciplinary in nature.

We were concerned when rain was forecasted and the job site was not covered. The existing structure had areas that were exposed to the elements. There was no response to our calls. (This happened on more than one occasion) On two occasions we did the best we could, using flashlights in the rain and dark, to cover our home with the battered, torn, tarps they had provided.
One of these times I had just got out of the hospital and was re-adjusting the tarps on the roof. Although we had paid NWFSR the roofing payment we had to pay again out-of-pocket to get a roof on before the rains started. The day after a rain/hail storm NW Finish Sunrooms called us saying they found a roofer. I asked the secretary if this person was licensed, bonded and insured. She informed me she did not know and that Joe would get back to us, which he did not.

There is extensive water damage to our home. At one point water poured into the basement and rained through the ceiling in my son's bedroom filling his computer with water, and everything else that was on his desk and dresser. His mattress was completely soaked through and had to be discarded. There is also extensive damage to the walls and ceiling of the two main floor bedrooms.

When we were concerned that the landing at the top of the basement stairs was not the 4 ' it was supposed to be but barely 2 ' wide, not wide enough for anyone to safely pass through the area, we were met with a change order of 17,000. (Although I requested it many times I was never given a written explanation off why we were given this change order) We were made to feel this was somehow our fault. Before the concrete was even poured I had expressed my concern many times that I was concerned there was not enough room to do the stairs. Many times I was told "trust us... You will see... This will all work out."

We were concerned the windows had not been properly installed (they did not even open and close properly) we were met with anger. NW Finish Sunrooms wanted us to sign a waver that they would not be responsible for windows if they reinstalled them.

They abandoned job site on August 29. They refused to give us the courtesy of anything in writing that they had done so we could proceed with our project while the weather was still good.

To top things off they have now decided we owe them another 28,000. And have implied that a lien on our home is possible.

On the Friday before NWFSR with drew from our job. Joe called me at home and asked me a personal question, Could I write out a check for $1000 to his framer. Joe told me that he did not have enough money to pay him. I went out and talked to the framer and asked him if he needed to be paid. He told me that he did not want a check from me, that was Joes job too pay him.

We have made constant and multiple attempts to work with NWFSR, have been extremely patient and given them the benefit of the doubt on many occasions. We have received promises, lies, and mostly total lack of response from them. At this point I dont think we should be punished further for Northwest Finish Sunrooms mistakes and carelessness.

Lars what frustrates me the most is that there are 14 other NW Finish Sunrooms clients who are in the same position as we are, getting letters from NW Finish Sunrooms, stating that they owe more money because one of NWFSR employees misrepresented himself. I got this information from the last framer who worked on my house. He also informed me that NW Finish Sunrooms was probably $200,000 in the hole for these current 15 jobs, including mine.

Now here is another clincher, the last Portland Fall Home & Garden Show a few weeks ago, NW Finish Sunrooms had a booth at the show! NW Finish Sunrooms could not finish my job, but went out looking for more work and I believe left us and 14 others on our own. Lars something to me seems very wrong about this.

I have contacted a lawyer to get some advice on what to do. She wrote NWFSR a letter last week asking them to just settle up where we are right now, remove us from their books on what we are suppose to owe them, and replace our sons new, one month old lap top computer. We now get no response from NW Finish Sunrooms, which is not unusual from them. I believe he is leaving us and possibly the 14 others on the books in case he does declare bankruptcy he can show that he has these 15 jobs put him under.

What I would like to see is the word to get out to the 15 clients of NW Finish Sunrooms, whose work did not get done or received a letter from NW Finish Sunrooms that I am not going to let this situation die here. These people signed a contract in good faith with NW Finish Sunrooms to do work for them and then backed out and then sent a letter to us all wanting more money. It would be nice to find these other people out there somewhere and Lars you do have the network of radio station to get this message out, even for the new clients NW Finish Sunrooms picked up at the last Portland Fall Home & Garden Show. If I am wrong in this, either Joe or Kevin rebuttle me and I will have documentation to prove every detail described above, I have not thrown anything away from our correspondences.
