Desert Horizon Remodeling
False commitments, poor work, and shady service Ripoff

Construction & Repair

I signed a contract with this company to build a new detached garage on 8/4. Doug Desjardins is the owner, and Ron Walker is the super. It is now 1/17 and the project is still not done. When I signed with them, they promised the project would be complete in 6-8 weeks. I chose this contractor because of a recommendation from a neighbor who had them build a garage for her - and to her credit, her project was going well when I spoke with her about the receommendation. But, a few weeks after I signed my contract and paid Desert Horizon a deposit, my neighbors project started going to hell - she could not get them to return her phone calls, and her project went months longer than it was suppose to. Mine didn't fair nearly as well - they would come and do a little work, but then let it sit for weeks or months without any work. Getting the company to return my phone calls was nearly impossible, and I probably have spent over 100 hours just trying to find out what is going on with the project at various times. Early on in the project I tried to cancel the contract, but the owner threatened to sue me for breaking the contract (and indeed to my surprise, they hide some terms on teh back of the contract that says you have to pay a large portion of the total contract amount if you cancel). The work is generally substandard, and I have to constantly ask they fix things - which is quite difficult since they don't answer the phone or return phone calls.

I have submitted several complaints with the AZ ROC, and I am now waiting for the ROC to come and do an inspection. They constantly leave nails in my pool, which are rusting the plaster. They leave the gate unlocked, and this is a concern to me since I have a pool. They consistently miss deadlines and expectations that they set with you, and get very rude when you try to hold them to their commitments.

Do yourself a favor, and check with the ROC before signing a contract with a contractor or builder.in my case, Desert Horizon Remodeling did not have any open complaints when I signed with them, but they have 6 open complaints now (not including mine - the ROC doesn't make complaints public until they have completed their inspection).

I just hope this project can get finished soon, it has been almost 6 months just to build a garage!
