General Electric
GE Warranty Abuse on Defective Product Ripoff

Construction & Repair

Purchased a GE profile glass top range. The door seal leaked upon first use. As it was under warranty, I reported it and three weeks later the repairman came out. Determined that the seal needed repair and ordered a part. Naturally I had to miss half a days work to be there.

Now it's gets interesting. He ordered the wrong part - another 1/2 day lost from work. The repairman then scheduled a 3d appointment and never came. Finally, on the 4th trip out (after I've lost two days of work total) he makes a five minute repair. The seal promptly leaked.

So far I have had a total of 10 visits and had 4 seals replaced. It's still leaking. This time the lower heating element broke and I removed the rear inspection panel to check. I discovered that the stove's insulation was actually catching fire and melting around the electrical panel wires - a definite fire hazard.

The GE approach to a warranty is to keep making repairs on obviously defective merchandise until it either becomes too expensive for the owner to continue (missing work every time) or the warranty expires. They refuse to replace the range even though the internal components are catching fire and melting. Product is not worth the money and the warranty service is designed to rip-off the owner.
