Oakwood Mobile Homes
Ripoff SCAM - Deceptive sales tactics Fraudulant

Construction & Repair

In 1999 I was only 18 years old. My husband and I moved to Kansas City so I could attend college. Rent was so high we decided to purchase a mobile home as an alternative. Being young and having no credit experience the salesman at Oakwood must've seen us coming. My husband and I were told that we did not qualify for the kind of home we wanted but if we started building credit with Oakwood in a less expensive single wide he guarenteed we could come back in a few years and trade it in to upgrade to a site built home. We thought this was a great opportunity to start credit with a company and work toward our dream of owning a home. We were deceptively led to purchase a mobile home that was already in a mobile home park and were told we were saving money by buying this pre-owned already placed home vs a brand new one. Two years later when we attempted to trade the single wide in toward the purchase of a site built home we were basically laughed at and woke up to a sad reality that the home was worth far less then we could ever get out of it even after paying on it for 2 years. We made every attempt to sell the home even going as far as to offer a buyer $2,000 cash to simply take over payments. Since the mobile home park that it was located in did not allow non-owners to reside at the home we were in a catch-22. I had to move to a job 300 miles away and after several months of paying for two residences without compensation for the empty mobile home we decided to let it default. I heard that Oakwood Acceptance Corporation (the loan holder) filed bankruptcy and went out of business so I didn't really expect to hear much more from this incident and expected after 5-7 years it would eventually fall off my credit and I could move on with my life. As of recent I have recieved calls from a company called Vanderbuilt claiming that I owe them approximately $30,000 because the home was sold for a mere $5000 and after the loan amount and refurbishment fees this was the total owed. If anyone could offer advice please do, this is ruining my credit and my life. I have considered bankruptcy but this is the ONLY thing on my credit that is dragging me down. Please if you are reading this DO NOT BUY A MANUFACTURED HOME FROM OAKWOOD!!! For what you will pay in interest you could wait 5 years save up the money and buy one that they screwed someone out of at auction for $5000 apparently.
