Oakwood Acceptance
Roof ripoff and lies Re: land/home package Jonesboro Georgia

Construction & Repair

When my husband and I purchased our mobile home from Oakwood Mobile Homes in 1999, we expressed to the sales person (Donny Corum, now at Palm Harbor near McDonough, GA) that we might want to put the home in Spalding County (Griffin, GA), he stated that he would just go ahead and put a 3/12 high-pitch roof on it so our home would be acceptable in Spalding County. So we assumed, since he was having to order the home (we ordered extras - a big hot tub in a double vanity sink bathroom with a skylight over the tub, a "blue" color package, etc.), the roof was no problem. And we thought that, since he was the finance manager of the Jonesboro sales location, he would know what he was doing. Wrong!!!

Also Donny stated that since we were already there at Oakwood looking at homes, we should go ahead and purchase one and place it in La Costa mobile home park until we were able to locate and purchase a piece of land for a land/home package. That sounded reasonable to us, especially since he offered the promise that Oakwood would move the home for us when we found land and would do a land/home package at that time. Well, we were deceived. Not only would Oakwood not help us with a land/home package after a year at La Costa, but Donny was no longer there to answer to our accusation that he did not put the correct roof on our home, and the skylight was smaller than we ordered.

Of course, our closing was taped, but we did not even consider the possibility that he was deceiving us by not putting the correct roof on our home and also knowing how hard it would be to do a land/home package after the home was purchased initially by itself. That is probably because the value of this mobile home has depreciated from $55,000 in the beginning to somewhere around $40,000 at present, even though it is a 2000 model. I do not know exactly when Oakwood Acceptance went bankrupt, but it could have possibly been around the time that we recontacted the Oakwood office in Jonesboro to have the home moved and do the land/home package. If it were not for assistance from two compassionate elderly gentlemen who live in Griffin, our home would still be sitting in La Costa mobile home park and would have never been placed on some land that we could call our own.

But I still have faith in Oakwood Acceptance. Just let us be a few days late on our payment, and Oakwood Acceptance is on the phone wanting to set up a check draft in advance to be drawn on our account at the time of our next pay day. They are so helpful like that, you know (Ha, Ha!).
