8500A Oddities

I've had this printer for @18 months. It has always simply launched into its self-checking mode whenever it wants to. Never mind if I'm doing a print job, because with its mind of its own... And it's off again doing a self-check.
Now it won’t print from computer commands. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling, but to no avail. The only way that I can print from the computer is to turn to printer off, and then on again. And of course it doesn’t start up to be ready to print, it first has to check itself.
It’s pathetic.
Maybe with HP’s planned obsolescence program, 18 months Is all I get.
After 20 plus years of HP printers (I know, I must have a long learning curve) it’s time to disregard the notion of brand loyalty, because that, of course, is but a one way street.
