I've been a VoIP user for several years. I live in Taiwan now, but need a way to communicate with family, friends and merchants in the US.

Started with Lingo, which was too unreliable to be useful, needing rebooting several times a day. Switched to Vonage, which was dependable & reliable and provided crystal clear connections. Then a friend told me about Magic Jack. It sounded too good to be true, but at US$20/YEAR vs US$25/MONTH, I had to give it a shot.

Magic Jack is everything it claims to be, and more. The key is adequate bandwidth. If you have a cheap, low-bandwidth Internet connection, of course the sound quality will be bad. With adequate bandwidth, it rivals even traditional land lines. People in the US say that it sounds as if I'm calling from next door. The voicemail notification matches Vonage, with the. Wav file being sent to me and I can listen from any computer. I've been using it for several months already without a single glitch.

US$20/year, I don't know how they can do it, but who cares? There is no long term commitment, so even if they last one month, I've saved money over Vonage. At that cost, any expectation of live, 24/7 customer service by phone is unrealistic. For the price, their online FAQ and chat is sufficient.
