Excessive and Unathorized Credit Inquiries

Attempted to purchase a vehicle in 2011 from Dunn-Benson Ford in Dunn NC. I found the salespeople to be very friendly and helpful. I was not pleased however, with the finance department.in attempting to qualify me for a loan, there were 16 unauthorized hard credit inquiries registered to my credit account in a period of 1 day. When attempting to contact the dealership for clarification on this issue, got no reply. Went into the dealership with a credit rating in the high 700's and left with my score in the mid 500's because of the high number of hard credit inquiries. Is this standard practice when attempting to qualify a customer for financing to initiate so many hard inquiries without the customers knowledge or approval.
