AAA - Roadside Assistance Deseptive RV Premium Roadside Assistance

Cars & Transport

My wife and I have been members since 2004 of AAA Roadside Assistance. We have been members of AAA "RV Premium" for the past several years, as we have become RV'ers.

On Oct. 24 as we were returning home from a trip in VA, when our tow vehicle lost power and we were forced to stop on the shoulder of I-40 West near Mocksville, NC. It was nearing nightfall and traffic was heavy. I didn't have any idea that this problem was going to turn into a nightmare, but thanks to AAA, that is what it ended up being.

I called the roadside assistance number and spoke with their representative, only to be told that because I was towing with an F450 Super Duty, they could not assist me. It seems if I had been towing with an F350 Ford, they would send someone out. Further they would not move my 38 foot fifth wheel trailer because there was not any problem with the trailer.

When I ask them to contact a diesel repair and tell them where I was at, they repeated again the reason they could not help me. When I explained I was never informed about the F450, not being covered. They said they were sorry, but it was considered a commercial vehicle, and there for no coverage could be provided.

Knowing the F450 was used as the base platform of some motor homes, I posed the question, "If I am driving a motor home, which is much larger and heavier, would you cover that?". I was told yes because it has a sleeping area. What???

My wife reminded me we did have another roadside assistance program and we should call that number. I called "Good Sams" number. I explained where we were located and that we needed a diesel repair roadside assistance. The representative ask for my phone number and said she would find someone and send them out. I would be responsible for repairs. I told her I understood.in 10 minutes she called telling me assistance was on its way to help.

Within 30 minutes two units from a local diesel shop were there to assist us. The truck and the trailer were moved to safe locations. The truck could not be repaired and was towed to a local repair shop. The trailer was placed in a guarded area and we were allowed to spend the night in our trailer. The next morning a large wrecker towed the trailer to our home.

I have since followed up with AAA and they agree that the limits on the F450 are not given in the coverage handbook. They say they are just sorry. I totally agree with them being "Sorry" I have since cancelled my coverage and will never again be a member of AAA Carolina. RV Premium is not the coverage you want to have when the need arises.
