Byers Mazda Subaru
Legacy engine issues at 100K

Cars & Transport

I purchased my 2006 Subaru Legacy from Byers Subaru in July. Having had a history with used car stress, I relied on the community reputation of this dealership in obtaining reliable transportation. I needed an AWD vehicle because I was moving to a reservation and would not have access to much more than shade tree mechanics.
After 2.5 years of normal maintenance, the engine began burning unnatural amounts of oil equaling a quart a week. This began in April. Thinking it a loose oil cap, I simply refilled it until taking it to Byers in October. Due to a miscommunication, they looked only for a leak and not a burn, told me there was no problem and sent me on my way. I continued to explain my concerns and finally in December of was suggested to rebuild my engine.

Financially, this is not an option. I spent significant funds on this car so I would not have large scale car repairs while still paying off a barely 5 year old car.

The corporate offices of Subaru have been unwilling to stand behind this engine, even though Subaru mechanics describe the situation as an anomaly and were surprised. 5 mechanics have been unable to pinpoint what is leading to the burn.

I was prepared to be a Byers and Subaru customer for life. Now I question the product I was sold and why the corporate office fails to stand behind the product.
