Scams - Valve jo

My co-worker recomended his friends shop when my check engine light came on I took my SUV to GQ auto repair and was told I needed a valve job it runs $1200 but because his friend recommend me the shop would do the job for $900.00. Cool asked around that was a good deal but it was a verbal deal okay so I didn't know better to get it in writing after several attemps and visits to the shop a month later my SUV was finished and I had a $1300 bill on top of the $500 I gave for parts. So my Invoice reads 1 head only, oil change, power steering fluid, AC freon, Crank shaft & a battery what the hell I'm pretty sure that isn't what a valve job is I was told in a text that a car wash, oil change & battery was free because my new battery somehow went dead well 6 weeks later I can't understand what happen I guess I was dumb & they where very unprofessional. It is not fair people like this can have a shop, I'm sure I am not the only one out there?
