HHR LT Ignition problem

In December I was unable to remove my Key from the ignition. I had to leave the Key in the ignition overnight. That night my husband went on line to find a fix and was able to find a way to remove the Key. However to this day we have to go under the steering wheel to remove the Key. Now the car will not start at all and the key will not move. We did go to the dealer and was told that this was not under warranty and that we would have to pay up to $500 plus labor. This isnt something like replacing brakes this is the ignition.
