Budget rent a car

On 12/11/08 I searched for a car (compact) on line, needed from 12/18/08 to 12/31/08. Found car @ budget for the 13 day rental for $297.78. When I went to book the car today, 12/16/08, the price was $1123.80 for the same car, same dates. I think that this is a rip off. I understand that rates may change but over $800.00 in 5 days is not right. I was also told by a person at the rental site I called that was the price. When I called budget's coustomer line all I was told was sorry but the rate changed. Please check into this. Thank you
