Deceptive Practice RipsOff Elderly

Cars & Transport

Dearler Warranty Services uses deceptive practices to scam elderly into taking mechanical breakdown protection which may not be needed. Mother was sent a card which read to her in effect that the warranty on her car was about to expire and she needed to continue this warranty. She is an 84 year old widow and was led to believe this was like car insurance and that she had previously had it. Over the phone she gave her banking information.

They sent her a bottle of liquid to put in her engine. It sat on a shelf for sometime. She did not know what it was for. Mom thought it was something I had ordered and sent it home with my wife. If my wife had not read the paper work in the box we would have not known about the contract. Plus she would not have been covered because the liquid was not in the engine of her car. Mom lives in a rural community of about 500. It is about five blocks from her house to the downtown area. On good days she may drive the five blocks to get the mail. The only other driving she does is to bingo one night a week and church on Sunday.

When we tried to call and cancel on her behalf the customer service representatives were rude and said only Mom herself could cancel. We took her to the bank and called from the bank and were finally able to cancel the contract. But a widow on a limited income with a handicapped daughter living at home is still out about $350.00 (unless we can do something about it). We have contacted an area television station and are contacting the Better Business Bureau.
