Cars & Transport

Wow, where do I begin?

Let's just say this is not the first time we've dealt with this Dealership (yeah, we must be a glutton for punishment).

We leased our 1st car with Northport Ford back in really as a young couple kinda just starting out. It was a Explorer XLT that ended up costing us over $2400 out of pocket and $398 a month for 47 months. This was after going in for a "special" that was $295 a month that (surprise, surprise) they didn't have in stock. So stupid us, we took this "deal" from a salesman that actually cried to us about needing this sale.

Anyhow, fastforward to 2008... Lease was coming due.

So we went to Country Ford (which we would recommend BTW if you are looking for a Ford dealership Suffolk County) and spoke to a salesperson about a loaded 2008 Expedition (not simply a Explorer). Right off the bat she gave us an extremely reasonable quote of $2100 total out of pocket and $450 per month.

Out of curiosity, or maybe just a stupid sense of loyalty we went to Northport Ford to find out what type of offers they would have for a comparable 2008 Expedition.

The salesperson at Northport clicked his computer (we never saw if it actually did anything) and said that he has something similar to what Country Ford was offering... Got up... Dissappeared... (probably to chat or smoke)... Then came back with a offer of $3890 down (that's just down, not out of pocket, as with tax we'd be looking at almost $5500 out of pocket) and a mindboggling $569 a month.

We looked at him puzzled and after a moment of silence (wasn't it obvious?) we said that this makes no sense and is not even competitive.

He then goes and pulls the Expedition up (for some reason) and then goes back to his "sales manager" and comes back with a new offer of $2100 down (again, still not out of pocket) and $469 a month.

We obviously still tell him it's not even close.

Here's where they start getting really interesting. The salesman clicks on his computer and supposedly brings up the spec on the Expedition we were offered at Country Ford and tells us the one he has has a lot of power options (including power 3rd row) that the Country Ford Expedition did not have. And this becomes their rallying call.

They eventually even lower the initial payment to be truly $2100 out of pocket but at $469 a month because of the power 3rd row (which they said the Country Ford Expedition did not have... Cause they "pulled it up").

Their "sales manager" (an extremely abrasive man named Jim) then comes in and starts trying to strong arm us (for lack of better words) again stressing all the things that isn't in the other Expedition (they are sure of it cause they have it "pulled up").

Since the $19 difference a month would have ended up being about $714 extra over the life of the lease, we got them to agree to pay for the last month of our current lease on the Explorer which they said "no problem" we'll eat that cause we want your business. So we figured $714-398 = $316 which was reasonable for all the so-called "extra" options that their Expedition had that the other one did not.

So we sign...

When we got home I checked and realized that we had already made the payment on the last month of the Explorer. Obviously wanting to make sure that we are still going to be compensated for it (since we were going to turn in the Explorer in one month early if we went with Northport) we called our salesrep.

He didn't call back.

So we called the general number thinking that maybe he was out.

We ended up getting their "sales manager" Jim on the line and he was beyond rude with words like "and?", "what do you want me to do?", "I'm not letting you out of it, no how", "too bad" when we told him that we had accidentally already paid for the last month... And then he hung up on us.

Being frustrated and thinking that we were being ripped off, we called Country Ford to ask about all those "extras" that apparently weren't in the Expedition they were offering us. To our shock, they said all of those things were indeed included!!!

Which begs the question, what exactly did Northport Ford "pull up"? And how do you start from $3890 down tax (about $5500) at $569 a month to all the way down to $2100 total at $469 a month. Did that mean if I was dopey enough not haggle that I would have been ripped off to the tune of $3500 (initial out of pocket) $3900 ($100 extra per month for 39 month lease) = $7400!?!?!?!?

Dishonest or Shysters? I'll let you guys decide. But trust me, it's not worth it (to deal with Northport Ford). Between the crazy starting prices, the nasty people and the poor service, take your business elsewhere or be ready to really haggle and really stick to your guns and be prepared for their nasty, nasty sale manager Jim.
