Ed Voyles Chrysler
Repair upselling, fraudulent repair estimate

Cars & Transport

I took my Chrysler to this dealership a few weeks back. It had begun to sputter out, which to me sounded like a catalytic converter type problem. Of course, I know nothing about cars, so I am at the mercy of the repair man to tell me. I was hoping the repairs would be under warranty, so I took it to a Chrysler dealer. I suppose I should have not have been shocked when they called me to tell me I needed a new air filter (which apparently you need replaced every single time you take your car to the dealership) ;-) and my estimate was well over $1100! I was told I would need a new crank sensor, all new plugs, "induction service", and transmission flush because the fluid was "slightly brown". I said no way and asked for the minimum amount of work to get back on the road. So it came to $999. Wow, a whole $100 off. $400 of that was labor.

A couple weeks later, I was riding down the road and my passenger side rear tire came off the wheel.in Ed Voyle's defense, they did recommend I needed new tires. However, they recommended I needed 4 new tires, when the driver side back tire was put on only 6 months ago. So I thought they were trying to upsell me, as they always do.

Long story short, I believed I needed a new tire (approx. $200). The rim/wheel never touched the ground, so it shouldn't be broken or bent in any way. Of course they called me back with a $1305 estimate. Said when the tire came off, it (and I quote) "destroyed the shock".
So I needed to get:
new tire ($280)
new shock ($140 $120 labor)
new tire sensor ($179 $150 labor)
4-wheel alignment ($193)
Camber bolts ($30 a piece)
Plugs ($118)

I called back and told them I was going to have the car towed to a different garage, i couldn't afford $1300 after JUST spending $1000 2 weeks before that. I received my paperwork from Ed Voyles, stating "customer agrees he was given estimate of $500". Hmmm, i should have read it before I signed it, but oh well, I just wanted to get out of Ed Voyles.

Car was towed to "Gordy Tire" down the road. Bill from Gordy called and said "all you need is a tire and a tire sensor. I got you a sensor for $120, and it snaps right into place, I don't know where they got $150 labor from. You don't need an alignment, that is ridiculous, and you don't need a new shock either. All you need is a tire and a sensor". Basically Bill saved me about $1000, which makes me wonder how much of the $999 from the previous week I did NOT need to spend?

I understand wanting to make a profit, but come on, the constant, constant, CONSTANT upselling and false estimates is blatant fraud. What can be done about this? Besides me telling everyone I know about it?
