A warning to everyone dealing with All Night Auto in Tinley Park. About 18 months ago I took my car in for a front end alignment (had a coupon and was going to check out a new local service). They were friendly enough and added an 'all points' inspection to the alignment for no charge. After about 30 minutes I was informed that my power steering unit was leaking, dangerous and need to be replaced asap (red flag!). They said that they couldn't do the alignment service until the unit was replaced at a cost of about $2100 and that driving away with the car was dangerous, "I wouldn't let my wife drive around in a car like this" (red flag #2!). I was asked if I had noticed the car pulling to one side (red flag #3) which I had not and answered no so the manager said that sometimes you don't notice this in a car you drive every day (!?!).
I am meticulous about my car care and do all the recommended maintenance on schedule and know the model pretty well, having bought it new and researched the expected longevity and known problems with this particular model and never heard of this problem at my wear and mileage. I asked to see the supposed leak and the manager said that they had put everything back together and cleaned it up so I would not be able to see it at that moment. I stated that I did not have the money to make this repair but would bring the car back if necessary and that's when they started stalling me-it took 45 more minutes of 'paperwork preparation' and 'manager consultation' before they would give my car back.
In the meantime I am watching a young woman write out a check for $4000 for repairs, yikes! I finally got out of there more than a little worried that actual damage had been done and got my car to the Saturn dealership for it's routine oil service. Had the mechanic show me the steering unit which was perfectly sound, same at the Firestone for rotation, they also said the steering unit was sound. I've been doing business for 8 years with these two businesses and have good relationships with them. I also did the cardboard under the car trick for several days and no leak.
Bottom line, All Night Auto LIED blatantly and I have real doubts that they would have actually replaced the perfectly good unit, I am sure they were trying to run an age old scam. Oh, yea, the manager also asked me more than once to 'let my neighbors know about us'.
No worries there, I'm telling everyone I know. I have the paperwork from all 3 places to back this up, interesting thing, the computer diagnostic printout from All Night Auto indicated that there was no indication of a problem with the steering, oops, even though I am a woman I can read! And I'm a computer tech! And I know about car repairs! Beware folks!
