Ripoff Company that did not refund deposit

On 9-18-06 i went to a dealer to finance a vehicle. I picked out a 97 nissan, after going in the office the salesman then went on his procedure to find a way to finance me... After running my credit and finding a bank that would finance me he then asked for my 500 $ deposit... Gave me a receipt (which i have) and advise me that he will call me in about 2hrs to come and pick up the car. When i got home i had some questions that i forgot to asked so i called them up and asked about insurance he adv that i would need to get full coverage insurance inorder to drive the car out the lot which i thought was not neccesary for a car that was only 1,999$... When i went back to the dealer later i pretty much thought this was a bad idea (only 2 hours later) and i didnt want to do the deal anymore i asked for my refund and quickly started getting the run around from the rep... He adv me that the owner could only give me the refund and that he just went to court and i would have to come back the next day. When i called the next day i was then offered a better deal a buy here pay here where if i get another 500 to put down i would nt have to get full coverage that i can get p.I. P coverage and just finance the remaining 1000 left on the car in 3 months. I said fine that would be alright and i would have the 500$ within 2 weeks. During those two weeks my mother purchased me a car... After she purchased me the car i went back to the dealer and asked for my 500$ deposit back... I was told that since i was approved by the bank to finance me the deposit is non refundable they have a sign there that says No refunds on deposits once bill of sale is signed... I never signed any paper work for this company and i feel like they just got a free 500$.. I would like something if any thing to be done..
