Ripoff Blackballed Driver's Horror Story

Cars & Transport

I was hired by WSTL in Sept. It was my first driving job, and I was a huge neophyte. Throught the 4 months of trainning I was basically running team for slave wages. I was told "That is the way it is." I had been making more as a burger flipper. The fisrt truck I was assigned, was supposedly a 1998 T600, but during a service on the road I discoverd that it was acutally a 1992, that had been rebuilt after getting rolled by another driver. I had been told that my first truck would have been a T but this didn't happen until the transmission mount broke on the T600. After that I drove a 1997 T2000.

Things were going very well until I did an audit of my logs and the mileage logs I had kept. I was shorted ove 1300 dollars over a 3 month period. I aske the payroll about this and was reimbursed 400 dollars. I was told that the remainder would appear on my next standard payroll. Never happend. I shoudl have taken them to court right then, but, all of a sudden I started getting really good loads. Lots of miles, and thought that I had accomplished something.

In June I made my first $1000 check. I audited it, and the mileage was off by less than 2%. I waswent worried about that small amount. THen there was a really strange run. I had taken a load to Long Beach, CA and was told the next load was ready to go. I arrived and was told the folks that could sign for the load were gone and wouldnt return. This was a Friday, so I called my dispatcher, Robin Sullivan one of the best they had, and he was not happy with the shipper, as they had told him they would wait for me. It was a matter of 5 MINUTES! SO I ended up sitting overnight, and the next day I went to Lompoc, CA and was told the load was bound for Eden, NC. I get there and then the Load info comes in, and the delivery was the following MONDAY! It is 3PM on Sat, and it is due at 8am on Monday. I had 16 hours left before I had to stop for 24 hours. They actually wanted me to make this run! WHen I asked the Load Coordinator if he had a C-5 at Barstow waiting for me, I would be there, otherwise it woudl be mid week due to the HOS. Wel it ended up being one of 3 loads I had been late on. It was the only load more than 20 minutes late.

The next week I was hit with a severe ear infection that required an in-office procedure, and was subsequently off the road for 5 days. I had been tols that I would be getting a newer truck, as the T2000's were getting removed from the fleet. So I had the truck cleaned out in anticipation of a newer T600 when I retured the following Monday.

On the Thursday before, I noticed the truck was missing from the parking lot local truckers used. I drove to a shipper I knew sanders used and it was there, getting loaded. I called and aske what was going on, and was flat told teh truck had to run. When I inquired about my next truck I was basically told to get up there on Monday. I checked with my Doc, he cleared me and I went up to Troy on Fri evening. The truck was there, and the night dispatchers said the 732 was still my truck. So I loaded in and drove to Atlanta. After this I was sent to Knoxville and swapped my empty for another load headded back to Atlanta. Noth of Atlanta a rock hauler passed me and the winshield was hit by a rather large rock, leading to a crack that went all the way across teh windshield. I was told to run the truck, deliver the load and then head to Troy for replacement. The next day I was diverted to the ATL Petro, where the load was swapped with one going to NC, no stop in Troy. I inquired about this and was told to head on into Troy. I then recived a message to stop the truck. I was in Newnan, GA and wa told a repair truck with a windshield had been dispatched. The vehicle that arrived was NOT a repair truck, but the end of my driving carrer. I was fired on the spot and kicked out of the truck. I was NEVER told the reason for this, but at first DAC had a "Driver Abandon" on it books.

I went back to Troy in a rental car, and was told I was released due to "Failure to Produce" Litterayl it was like I had been on an assembly line. When I presented a printout of teh DAC reprot thay had sent, I ponted out the Driver Abandon thing. This was removed as a clerical error, and I assumed that I would be able to find another job in short order. Not to be due to the innacurate reprt sent to DAC. If I ever drive again it would only be possible as an Owner Operator.

I know there are drivers that have long carreres with WSTL, but they have to be busting jusat about every USDOT/FMCSA regulation out there. I was actually complemented numerous times by the log auditors for my logs being so accurate and correct.
