Ripoff shop supplies overcharge

I took my wife's car for a 15000 mile inspection quoted at $190 (tax and shop supplies) and state inspection at $30.

To my surprise, at the checkout, a $25 miscelaneous charge for shop supplies was included in the bill, totalling $250.

The service advisor stoically insisted on this being common practice across all dealerships and that regulations (unverifiable at the time and not on display anywhere) allowed the dealership to charge up to 10% of the bill in shop supplies, which amounted to disposal fees and things like rags and cleaning products using during the service. Never mind that $25 out of $197 (price with taxes) is actually 13%, but the service advisor refused to break down the fee into disposal fees and actual shop supplies.

Incidentally, during the 7500 mile inspection, the same shop supplies fee was only $13.50 (granted, this service does not include the shop supplies charge for air filter change).

Also incidentally, I took my other car for its 7500 inspection at the Honda Dealership and the shop supplies charge was a mere $2.84 out of a $75 service (a mere 4% of the overall service).

At any rate, watch out for this fee on more expensive routine maintenance (such as the eye-watering $500 30000 mile inspection) and be caught by surprise by a $50-60 "shop supplies" charge at that time.

I don't consider it a rip off but the service advisor refused to break down the $25 fee for analysis or comparison with other shops.
