Ripoff - No matter how bad your credit, do not let them help you - they don't help, they make it worse

Cars & Transport

In the state of Illinois, J.D. Byrider has changed it's name to Car Credit America. Let me start out by saying, yes - my credit was bad and I was looking for a start. I knew I was going to pay an enormous interest rate. I was willing to pay my dues to start over and prove myself. That being said, let's put that aside.

In July of Car Credit America offered a $50.00 down payment and you drive away. I went in, filled out an application. They actually surprised me by telling me my credit was not too bad, but I still could not get financed at a reputable dealership. I test drove a couple of cars, one being a 1997 Saturn. It had problems, and after talking with the salesman, he promised everything I found would be fixed. I filled out the paperwork, gave my $50.00 dollars then proceeded to the finance department. There I was told that everything was videotaped and recorded. There I learned that they would need $600 more for a down payment. Payments of $200 dollars every pay period for 3 payments would take care of that. Then the payments of $149 would kick in. I had been leasing a car from Budget at a rate of $650 per month. I did not want to do that anymore, so this seemed a viable solution. WRONG! Two days after I got the car home, the engine light came on. The ignition key given to me was the wrong one. Yes, it started the car, but the car could not be turned off completely. I had to open the hood and disconnect the battery. Then open the hood and connect the cables to start the car. The two front tires repeatedly went flat. $30 to fix the valve stems. I start work 4:30 am. None of this was pleasant. Then the transmission went. Sorry - let me backtrack. I was told that I had to buy a $1,900 warranty with the car. Done! I called Car Credit America, told them of the problems, their answer??? &We can't pick it up to look at it until later next week, maybe after that. WHAT??? I can't wait, I am single - who will take me to work at that hour of the morning. Their response - we don't offer loaners and you still have to make your payment on the car.in the meantime, I run a credit report on myself. Yes, they are reporting the payments (good) but something struck me on the contract - I am paying $12,000 for this car by time I get done, and they are reporting only $7,000. Oh My God - how did I miss this one.?! Yes - dummy, stupid, idiot, naive. I will not use being a woman as an excuse. I will not blame them for my not walking out. But - only later (too late) did I realize what harm this would actually cause me. I am allowed 8 sick days per year at my job, I've used up 6 of them because of the last minute calls in to work with car problems. It is now February 06 and the car is still sitting in the driveway. They can't seem to get to it.

Here's what I did. I've had enough of paying for this darn thing and not being able to drive it. Since it was reported on my credit by them that I'm paying as scheduled, I used that to my advantage. I went to a reputable dealership and bought a with $2,000 down. And - - the clincher - I'm not paying 29% interest. Yes - it's 17%, but it's all much better, and I get to work and anywhere else I have to go without the problems.
This week, I sent certified letters to Car Credit America, CNAC, and Greenwich Finance.in the letters (same one to all) I revoked their being able to garnish my wages, I gave them a Cease and Desist order on contacting ANY of my references (yes, I told them to stop, before they started) and I let them know that a copy of my letter along with my complaints were being sent to the Attorney General and the Secretary of State Police (the latter governs the car industry). I don't know what is going to happen. As of right now, the car is on the driveway. I've taked off the plates, emptied out the car, and it is their's for the taking.
