I often rent cars from this agency. Because I am in the truck rental business, I am conscientious about renting equipment that is properly maintained and ready to rent. I usually inspect the car prior to driving off the lot for wear and damage and note it on the contract. Once I get to the gas station, I inspect the fluids. Each and everytime I do this, I find that the oil is extremely low as well as other non-vital fluids, e.G. Windshhield washer fluid. I inform them upon return of the equipment everytime. I usually get an apology and sometimes a few dollars taken off the rental. Good for me, BAD for the next unsuspecting customer who assumes all should be good for their trip.
My point. The fluids are not checked at the dealership before or after each rental.
I spoke to the District Manager this time who was at the dealership prior to and after my return of the car rented. I asked him and the agent to accompany me out to the car during the checkout process and had them witness the 2 out of 3 cars they gave me to inspect the oil. 1 car had just enough oil to touch the tip of the dipstick. The 2nd car had enough to show below the minimum level. Not Good. The 3rd vehicle had the proper amount of oil. The District Manager stated that the oil is checked every 5 thousand miles (preventative maintenance).
If I had taken the car to Las Vegas in the high heat, running the A/C, I most likely would have had a breakdown with the vehicle. Although he stated that they wouldn't hold me responsible, I felt my best interests in getting to my destination was not the priority based on my experiences.
I also told him that I had spoken to a sales agent about purchasing a rental car from this company.
I know now that although the oil is changed every 5000 miles as well as checked for other issues, the engines in these vehicles are starved for oil, which is sending the vehicle to an early grave some time after it has been sold. I won't be buying a rental car from them. After checking with an ex-employee, confirming this policy, I found that this is common practice in the industry with the majors as well.
