Ripoff for more interest

My husband died suddenly on may 15. He left a bill with citifiancial that was in his name only.in good faith I tried to pay them off. I sent them a check for 26,058.09. They sent the check back stating I need certified funds. To top it all off now they are telling me the payoff is 27,305.97. It comes to 1300.00 more than the origingal payoff! Just because some time between sending the check back and me sending them a payment by cashiers check was a little over a week. They socked me with the extra interest. I tried to get a breakdown of the extra interest with no success. My financial advisor and I conferenced called them and he couldn't get them to tell me anything. So I am going to pay off the remaining balance which I don't feel I should have to do. Any answers for me if I really should pay it or not? Thank you
