Payoff Check of 26,058.09 Returned After Husband's Death

My husband died suddenly on May 15. He left a bill with Citifinancial that was in his name only. In good faith, I tried to pay them off. I sent them a check for 26,058.09. They sent the check back, stating I needed certified funds. To top it all off, now they are telling me the payoff is 27,305.97. It comes to 1300.00 more than the original payoff! Just because the time between sending the check back and my sending them a payment by cashier's check was a little over a week, they socked me with the extra interest. I tried to get a breakdown of the extra interest with no success. My financial advisor and I conference-called them, and he couldn't get them to tell me anything. So I am going to pay off the remaining balance, which I don't feel I should have to do. Any answers for me if I really should pay it or not? Thank you.
