The "Good Hands People" - Until You Make a Claim

I had AllState for approximately 5 years when I filed for a major claim. My husband and I rented a private garage but before we rented this garage, I called my agent and asked if my homeowner's insurance would cover this garage that's not on our property. He said that it would and therefore, we proceeded with rental agreement. Six months into the rental, the garage was broken into and all the expensive tools that were stored were stolen. We filed a police report and contacted Allstate. We provided the police report and the value of the tools. The tools were valued around $2,000. We received $200 from Allstate. I contacted my agent but he said there was nothing he could do so we took Allstate to court.

I never cashed the $200 check.in court, their high priced lawyers (we were very young and were wrongly advised that we didn't need a lawyer because it was a small clamis court) claimed that the garage was never covered. If it was never covered, then why did they send a $200 check? This clearly shows acknowledgement of coverage. Unfortunately, the judge ruled in their favor even though I showed him the uncashed check.

Think twice before signing up with Allstate and if you have to take them to court, make sure you consult with a lawyer.

You're in "good hands" - just don't make any claims with them.
