TCF Bank
Outrageous overdraft fees and No support for Debit Card Fraud

Business & Finance

I have two accounts with TCF, one personal, and one household. I transferred my unemployment payment which is directly deposited, from my personal acct., into my household acct. I should have left more to cover the monthly service fee, but I got distracted, and forgot. This overdrew my acct.By $6.19. Unbeknownst to me, In October, they instituted a new policy whereby you are charged $28 PER DAY for each day the acct. Is overdrawn by more than $5. Since I had only $3 left in my acct. After the transfer, and had no other activity, I didn't check the act. For three dys.By the time I discovered the overdraft, they had charged me almost $90 for what amounted to a $1.19 mistake. If I had just left $1.19 more in the acct. There would have been no overdraft fee. I would be willing to pay the $28 once. My mistake, I'll eat that. But $28 three times is absurd. There were no additional transactions that they had to process because of the overdraft. They encountered no additional charges. I pay them $10 a month for the priviledge of using my money interest free, and this is how they treat me.

Then there's the issue of protection for Debit Card Fraud. Thanksgiving day my son discovered that someone had charged $350 worth of airline tickets to his TCF Debit card. Since he does not use the card online it was most likely done by skimming. This is when someone attaches a device to the card reader at an ATM or retail location which collects the data from the magnetic strip of every card run thru the reader. They then remove the device, and use the data to make new cards tied to those bank accounts and either charge things or clean out the accts. If this is done with a credit card, you are protected. They simply remove the charge from your statement, and you are not responsible. If it's a debit card, the bank has discretionary power to protect you or not. He called TCF Customer service and immediately cancelled the card thru the automated system. The following day, (because no one was manning the phones on Thanksgiving) he called TCF Customer service and reported the unauthorized use of his card. He was told to write a statement containing certain information, and take it to any branch so they could fax it to corporate. They also told him they would immediately begin an investigation. He did this, and the mgr. At the branch said that's not how they do it. They are not supposed to fax it. He was told to go back to Customer service for further instructions. Eventually, because the bank mgr. Likes him, she faxed it. When she looked at his acct. On the bank's computer, she discovered that someone had tried to use the card several times after it was cancelled, and the transactions were denied. She also told him that an investigation would not begin until the transaction processed, and it was still pending. He asked why they couldn't simply deny the transacton like they stop payment on a check. He was told it doesn't work that way. This was his portion of the rent money. Now they're saying it could take up to two months to refund the money, IF they dicide he did not make the purchase. Where's the customer service here? The fact that someone tried to use it after it was cancelled verifies that it was an unathorized purchase. I called corporate to discuss both these matters. I got someone's voice mail. I left a message saying that they were about to lose three accounts over $6. No one called me back. That's how much they care about their customers. I am closing both my accounts as soon as all pending transactions clear. I'm tired of someone else having access to, and control of, my money. They can't or won't protect my debit card, so I don't want one. Stay away from TCF. They'll rape you and leave you for dead.
