Ripoff I cancelled my credit card and they still billed me an anual fee

I cancelled my credit card with the company about 9 months ago. I was paying my bill a little more than the minimum, so I can get it paid up. Then this month they send me a bill with an anual fee added on. Then this shot me right back up to where I was. How can they add a annual fee when I cancelled my card?
