Loan modification

My sick and elderly neighbors tried for a loan midification on their home for over a year. As of two days from now they will be thrown out of their home with all their belongings. Boa strung them along for over a year, telling them they need more info, they are working on the loan, etc. They were told not to make house payments or they would not qualify. As of 3 days ago, their home was sold at auction. He is 75 years old with congestive heart disease and copd. She suffers with ms. How can this happen in this country? My heart is breaking for them and the scariest thing is that this could happen to any one of us. When will our government wake up and do something to stop this bloodletting by these banks?
