Ripoff The company told my mom they had to pay this by the 24th or the debt would go back up to $1200, Debt that is not even real!

My mom had begun to receive these really rude and agressive messages.
The one she got last was, "Linda, this is Hugh Ross! You need to call me! It is very important you call me!"
He was so rude, I thought for sure it had to be some marketing scam. My mom has enough going on these days, so I told her I would call the guy back and find out why he was calling.
He said my mom owed a debt of $1200 from 1992! Eleven years ago! That sounded really strange. I said, 'okay, well can you tell me who did we owe this money to in the first place?'
He could not tell me who the original debt was to; it didn't make sense. His tone was weird. And repeatedly he kept trying to get me to pay by phone, 'we can do a check by phone right now, it is the quickest way to do it you know. It will then be off your report.'
He was so pushy, I knew it wasn't right. So I said no, and that I would need something in writing that outlined the 'who, what, where, when.' He kind of laughed at that; I did not find it funny!
He said that I would be receiving a settlement letter shortly, and that 'corporate has settled your debt down from $1200 to $268. If you ask me that is too low, but hey, I'm not corporate.' Then he added that we had to pay the $268 by the 24th of this month or the debt would go back up to $1200.
This jerk was trying to make me feel lucky (which I was starting to) that the big CORPORATE GUYS lowered the debt. Debt that is not even real!
I talked it over with my mom. She was angry. She said it was not true, didn't make any sense.
But being so worried about credit and what not, we started to say, 'well, maybe next check we can pay it off and have it done with.'
After our conversation, I felt weird about the guy's tone and his inability to tell me the original creditor, and sure enough I found this website. THANK YOU!!!
I called Hugh Ross back, and politely told him I found out his company is in the business of ripping people off, and that he will not get our money.
