I do owe one of their clients money, and they want the entire amont now

Business & Finance

I called this firm hoping to make a settlement. Their idea of a settlement is 70 percent or all of it.
I offered them 50 dollars a month and was told immediately that wasn't enough. I hung up and talked to the second person. I got the same responce.
Responce is a mild word for what I got. I was called a liar, and the implication was made that I was a thief.
The man I was talking too refused to believe I was on S.S.D. Thats the federal disability benefit offered by Social Security.
I found their email address after I did a marathon 36 hour research session on my laptop. I sent them two emails, the first that I was considering legal action for violations of the free trade act. The second was to reiterate the fact that my sole income is S.S.D.
I am "judgement proof" in the eyes of the law. Federal benefits aren't subject to garnishment, or frozen bank accounts for any reason short of defaulting on child support, student loans, or delinquent taxes.
I asked them if they wanted to get the payments at 50 dollars a month or if they want an uncollectable debt. I gave them a deadline time to call me back of this morning.
I have second thoughts about being so forceful. Yet I do not feel ashamed of my email. I was so angry I was ready to spit nails as I wrote the email.
Was I wrong to force the issue? I am going to send the payments I promised in writing so I could counter their claim if it ever reached a court that I had no intention of paying them back. I am still scared and angry at the sametime.
Oh I intend to record the call when it comes in. I live in state that requires all parties to know if a call is being recorded. I will only speak to the rep if I am allowed to record the converstation on my end.
Oh and regardless of what I said in the email I intend to pay for as long as I can. I think it will improve my position in a suit if I am making payments in good faith. I will tell the rep that even if my offer is declined a third time.
