Credit card closed without warning, declined at restaurant

My card is a Citi Shell Mastercard. It has recently been refused at checkout, although more than $1,100 in credit remained available. The first time was at a restaurant on Friday, October 16, and the second at a discount store on Saturday, October 17. In both places it was declined.

When I phoned Shell Mastercard, they told me the account had been shut because of something Citi saw in my Equifax report. I then got all three of my credit reports. Strangely, Equifax alone still shows the Shell account as open, whereas Experian and Trans Union say it was closed at the request of the issuer. I have never made a late payment or gone over my limit, and I frequently paid above the minimum. There is also nothing negative on any of my reports.

What did Citi find in my Experian file to justify closing the card? Evidently I am in good company. On assorted consumer complaint websites, other cardholders report that Citi has been closing a great many Shell Mastercard accounts, most of them in good standing, citing the same Experian reason. It appears that Citibank had a weak third quarter and decided to terminate thousands of these accounts without notice. On the phone they said a notice about the closure had been sent to me, but I still have not seen it. Mine and thousands of others were closed on the 14th of October.

I truly hope Citi's move does not hurt my credit. Paying bills on schedule has always been my practice. I also hope Citi will not impose overdraft fees or insist that the balance be paid at once. I do have another card to shift the balance to, if needed, but I would rather agree a repayment plan with Citi Cards, preferably a set sum monthly until I have paid it all. The way they have acted toward me, and toward thousands of other Shell Mastercard holders, is disgraceful.
