To the best of my recollection...
While using the online website Lendingtree.com to search for refinance options, I encountered a popup ad for "free credit report"
I took the bait, though I do not remember filling out any specific application form (I did give personal data to LendingTree).
I cannot remember getting any credit report online and did not get anything in the mail. At no time was a fee or subscription service detailed.
About 3 weeks later I received a charge to one of my credit card accounts ($79.95) for subscribing to their credit monitoring service. They had most of my personal info correct. They either got it through LendingTree or I did fill out a short form.
What I do know is that I never authorized, knowingly, to subscribe to their service. Never got a credit report or a so-called confirmation via email that I signed up.
I called CIC immediately after getting the bill to cancel which they did, but the service rep was a real jerk.
I also called my creditcard company and they reversed the charges. It's a first for me to get scamed online.
Popup Ads really suck!!!
