Ignore them and they will make your credit bad

I had a "FREE" checking account, that I was only using for xmas. I had about 9 dollars left in there from the last time I used the account in Dec. I failed to add or remove any cash this passed xmas, and apparently my account became dormant. I then started getting charged 5 dollars a month for what they say is a "government requred fee" which government they could not say. Well, after about 4 months (yes, they continued charging for a dormant account, at the second month, they put the account in the negatives, then they did it 2 more times) Well, the last mail I recieved from them was a dollar in the negative. I didnt think much of it, I figured they would just close the account and be done with it, since they did take the last 8 or 9 bucks that was in there. NO, they charged the fee until it was over 11 dollars negative, then the charged an overdraft fee to the account, then sent the account to a collections agency. From what I have read on this site, I am not the only person this has happened too. It would have been easier for them to just shut the account down. They already had my money, in a free account, which they opened with no trouble, now I owe them money for a free account? How is this right, If I was to recieve money from somebody to hold until later, and then demanded they pay me more money later because they never collected the money back from me, I would be called a moron, but then, I cannot report a negative on somebodies credit report.
