Made payment arrangements but kept charging late fees that added up to more than the original amount owed

My husband lost his job and I got 2 months behind on my Target red card account. I called and made payment arrangements of $57 a month for 3 month to get me caught back up. They automatically deducted the payment amount from my bank account.

What they didn't tell me was that every month they would charge me an additional $39 late fee on the account. So after paying $171 only $54 actually went towards my balance. My past due amount was almost the same as when I made the payment arrangement.

I called customer service and asked why I was receiving late fees when they were getting there payment on time as agreed. They said that until the total past due amount was paid in full I would keep incurring late fees.

How are you suppose to get caught up when they are charging you these outragous late fees? I was making an honest attempt to bring my account current but they have now made it impossible for me to do so. I am fighting a losing battle with them!

I think they should put your account on hold until you are current with your payments. Once you have made all your required payments they could activate your account again. I was never late on my payments prior to my husband losing his job. Target needs to help their card holders when they are facing finacial hardship.instead they take advantage of their situation!!!
