Card Services Can I get proof?

Perhaps someone can help me with this problem. I recently checked my credit report and found that I was joint account holder for a credit card with Wachovia. The problem is, I did not apply for this card! Several phone calls and a visit to a branch resulted in several responses. We went into a branch to apply for this account (although there is no signed application on file). We applied over the internet (which is absolutely false). Lastly, application was made by phone and "I was present". A visit to the branch resulted in the offer to unattach this credit card (which was offered by phone to the primary holder as Overdraft protection) from our joint account and attach it to the other persons checking account. But doing so would not remove me as a responsible party for the debt on this account. Is there a way to request proof that I applied for this card? Can someone offer sound advice as to how I can handle this problem? Thanks in advance.
