Phony lottery Winning and Bogus Govt. Tax Check Scam

Business & Finance

Just received what is probably the latest version of the Phony winning lottery / sweepstakes scam. Did not fall for it, but thought I'd inform everyone. They sent me an official looking check for $4,989.60 claiming this is the 3.8% govt. Tax due on a $100,000 prize. Claims my name was randomly chosen by computer for 4th quarter of 2008 sweepstakes draw from random participants in other legit sweepstakes like: Readers digest, Publsher's Clearing house, etc.

(Like how would they know I entered anything?). The letter comes in plain white envelope with my name on a self-stick address label, like they bought it from a mailing list company, with a canadien stamp. And yes, you have to call a phone # from Canada and talk to the Rep., whom I'm sure would tell me to deposit the check but immediately send them a cashires check or money order, etc. For this or similiar amount to pay the taxes and then thy would
arrange to send me the big winnings... Blah, blah, blah.

Bottom line: DON'T fall for this! The check is bogus and so is the phony lottery winnings. These scumbags just play a numbers game and hope they can get a few suckers to make it pay off. They change names, phone #'s to stay ahead of the law.in this case, they said respond by Dec. 24,08, most likely because they'll have shut down and moved on somewhere else. The address in New York is most likely fake or a PO Box building mail drop.
