Business & Finance

So I had some student loans that went into default, they were handed over to GRC. Arrangements were made and I was SUPPOSED to be on their "rehabilitaion program". Payments were supposed to deduct from my account on the 20th of every month.

In the 8 months that I made payments to these people ON TIME, not once did it ever come out of my account on the agreed date. It was always 3,4 days, sometimes even a week late. Apparently I had missed a payment last month (by $5) and now I am in the "garnishment rehabilitation" program.

I had received a notice that I missed this payment and gave them a call not knowing that they had a "20 day grace period" in case a payment didn't go through or you were unable to make a payment. Conveniently enough, I did not receive this notice letter until AFTER the 20 day grace period.

After calling them back to resolve the issue, they told me that my best option would be to enter the "garnishment rehabilitation" program. This was last week. They "let" me make 2 additional payments before the garnishment period began (which was supposed to post to my account on the 28th of last month).

After checking my balance online all weekend and all this morning, November 3rd, (there is enough for them to take the payment out), there was nothing that reflected this debit transaction. I called them again, and got the runaround even after I escalated the situation and talked to a supervisor.

They claimed that the payment was showing in their system, but strangely no such transaction is showing on my online bank site. They told me to wait another couple of days for the transaction to post. So either the payment came out, and its not showing up in my account, or the payment still hasn't posted in the first place.

Either way, now I don't know how much money I have to work with, and with rent coming up soon, this is a little scary for me since now I don't know if I have enough in my account to cover rent. The best part was that even after explaining this to the supervisor, he didn't seem to give any second thought to the fact that we "agreed" on a date for a debit transaction, and that this date has never been met.

I don't have a problem with making the original payments, they just need to ACTUALL COME OUT OF MY ACCOUNT WHEN THEY SAY IT WILL. Now I'm stuck with this garnishment which is gonna put me back 10% an additional $50 payment every month. I find it hard to believe that with someone who made 8 consecutive payments and missed the FINAL payment by $5 and wasn't notified until it was too late to give them the $5, that they should be garnishing my wages. I am WILLING TO MAKE THE PAYMENTS, I just can't afford the 10% wage cut for the next 9 months.
