Collector Posed as County Sheriff Employee to Demand Payment

A collection agent from Citibank called my home and said she was with the County Sheriff's Department and needed to speak to my daughter now!

I once again asked who she was with, and she said she was with the County Sheriff's Department, that she had a complaint against my daughter, and that she needed to speak with her or she would send an officer to pick her up.

I asked what it was regarding. She said, "Let me speak to her now!" I woke my daughter up, and my daughter asked her what this was regarding.

The woman told my daughter she was with the County Sheriff's Department and that she needed to pay her bill or she would be locked up or in court.

As I was listening on the other line, I told my daughter to ask for her telephone number at the Sheriff's Department so that she could verify who she was.

The woman then admitted she was with Citibank and was authorized to use the name of the County Sheriff's Department.

Well, that's when I spoke up. First of all, this is one of those companies that shoved a credit card down her throat in her last week of high school, at the age of 17, knowing she had no means of repaying the debt.

I told the rude woman to never call my house again. I then hung up. Of course, she called back 6 times.

Finally, I told her that I was going to put the County Sheriff's Department on the other line. She said a few choice words and hung up.

And of course she called back. I then told her that since she didn't want to talk to the County Sheriff's Department, she should never call my home again.

Well, she said, "I am not going to stop calling until the bill is paid!" I told her this is not my daughter's phone, that it is mine. She said she didn't care.

I then told her that I was going to contact the FTC, the BBB, the State Attorney, and the Attorney General. She said, "Go ahead." So I am. I just stopped her first.
