Trying to file on a claim that was already taken care of with original company

My wife recieved a call from another collection agency stateing that we owed $59.00 from last august. Well we did extensive reserch through our records and found that we had payed this last year to rmcb. The problem is it was not august it was march and the amount was 59.90 my wife just missed a bill and took care of it as soon as we were contacted so how did this other collection agency get this information. I feel that there is a rip off in the making and we are not going to pay it of course.
