MCM collection attempt on fabricated account - is this a fraud?

I just received a collection letter from Midland Credit Management under a name I used 17 years ago. I've never had an unpaid account in my life. The original creditor is listed as Citibank, but my accounts with them had been closed for over a decade. I do not see any negative credit report yet. Credit report shows Citibank as closed and never late in payment. My question is, do I even justify their existance by writing them a letter requesting for verification or do I just ignore them since I've never had an unpaid or over due debt and statue of limitation has obviously expired. Writting them a letter is not a problem, but I don't want to give them the verification of where I currently live. Would this prompt them to file a law suit? If this goes to court, is it better that I had sent them the dispute letter in the first place? I am willing to go to court to protect my rights, but I'd just like to get rid of them from my life.
