Hold on my money

I sold my car and was paid with money grams. I saw my deposit online in my account then the next day it was gone. I called and was told there was a 11 day hold on my account to make sure its good. Why would the banks say you can deposit and get your money out the same day? I have to wait 11 days not counting weekends just to get my money, thats the craziest thing i have ever heard of. Bbl to complain some more i just got a email from them about my bill payments thats set up with them.
