They threaten to repo but won't return our calls!

In June my husband purchased a vehicle with Americredit financing. We had some financial difficulties in the past and needed a vehicle. They were the only ones who would help. Well, even though we had some bumps along the way, we made our payments... Sometimes late, but always made them. My husband was off on disability last year and we deferred payments. Well, to make a long story short, our loan expired on Jan 2. At the time we owed about $3,800. We continued to make payments to them and they accepted them, even though they said the loan had expired, was no longer secure, and that they would be charging it off and repossessing the vehicle. We only owe $2,200 on a vehicle we paid $25,000 for (not including the interest!). I have called them repeatedly, get no answer, leave messages on their voicemail and get no return calls. I don't know if I should keep making payments or not?!? I don't want to pay anymore if they are going to pull in to repo the vehicle anyway. I don't know what to do, honestly, I just want to get this paid off and taken care of, yet, they will not return our calls now. I will refuse to let them take the vehicle if they do show up... We didn't pay all this time for nothing. This company is definitely not one to deal with.
