$39 Late Fee Charged Before First Statement on Furniture Loan

We bought furniture at Haverty's and financed it through CitiFinancial. No statement was mailed to us until the first payment was already overdue, and then we were hit with a $39 late fee plus a finance charge. Before that, we had gone to Haverty's to say that no bill had arrived, and the store told us not to worry because one would show up. One did eventually arrive. The deal was supposed to carry no interest, yet that clearly did not hold. Being billed a late fee before a statement even exists looks like a scam to me. Be careful with this lender. They seem eager to cause a mistake so that you end up paying interest, for example by sending the statement only after the payment is late.
