NCO trying to collect bogus $8000 debt from 73 year old woman

My 73 year old mother received a letter from NCO Financial stating she owed $4780.82 plus interest totaling $8383.63. She said she never owed this amount to anyone and never had a Chase account since her bankruptcy in 1993. I am VERY glad she comes to me about mail she does not understand.

We got on-line yesterday (God bless the internet!) to get a copy of her credit reports to verify the account. Neither Chase or Providian were listed. There was a regular full credit inquiry from NCO Financial listed from August of this year.

I read another respondent on this site stating an inquiry dated the same who also received a debt statement from NCO this month.

I contacted NCO today and they were quick to say they were sorry the letter was sent in error. They stated this debt was discharged during bankruptcy. My mother has an exceptional credit history, just as the others seem to have that have received NCO bills.

My thought is maybe NCO is phishing for good credit holders to "request" payments from. These are people who are careful to keep their history good and a debt collector threatening a bad report may scare a payment out of some. Thank you for having this site to give us a central point to report these companies.
