Bank Of America
Debit Card Transactions Stacked High to Low to maximize Fees

Business & Finance

I recently forgot about a $100 check I had written to donate to our local food bank. My mistake and I'm ok paying the $35 NSF charge for my mistake. However, the same day I made a $1.08 charge for a movie rental, $41 for a haircut, 42.37 for gasoline and $88.95 for grocieries. My account balance at the time was $185.43 They cleared the $100 first, leaving $85.43.

That day I rented the movie, got a haircut, bought gas then grocieries in that order.

They cleared the $88.95 first making my account overdrawn $3.52 then the other transactions in descending order. This caused 4 OD at $35 each ($140 total).

When I called customer service the told me that they clear highest to lowest because that is what their customers prefer. Why would anyone prefer that?

They stack the transactions to maximize fees not to please customers.

I understand forgetting the $100 check was my fault. I think the $35 fee was fair but 4 fees is outrageous. $35 fee for a $1 debit card charge?

They refuse to compromise with me on this at all. I'm closing my account this week.
