Remex inc on my credit report saying I owe $800 to a company I never heard of

I recently recieved a copy of my credit report and I saw that this collection agency Remex inc was on it. There was no number listed so I looked it up online and found it. I called them and asked what this collection account was all about. It is for a company called City Music Center. I asked where this company is located and was told in Burlington NJ. I got the contact info for this company and proceeded to call them. I found out that this music company is a rental company for musical intruments for schools. I asked about an account with them under my name. They told me they had no record of me ever being in their system. I called back Remex inc and explained to them that it has to be a mistake because I never purchased nor rented any musical instruments from that company. They told me that there was a record of my renting an instrument (they could not tell me what kind) back in 2005 for an elementary age child. I do not have any children in my household nor would I have any reason to rent an instrument. I asked them to send me proof of this account and to investigate the matter because I am not paying for something I know I did not do. I was told to pay the debt and then if they find out that it was not mine I can get my money back. No way will I pay for something I did not do and I wont pay a company and pray I get my money back. Now I get phone calls every day and letters three times a week stating that I owe this money and if I refuse they will take more efforts to collect this debt. I am at a loss now for what to do. I want them off my credit report and also would like to find out how it got on there in the first place.
