Old Sprint debt they say I owed but never had a Sprint account in my life

I received a letter a couple of weeks ago from Afni stating that I owe $108.78, for a SPRINT bill. I called the company and they told me the bill was from 1999 and that Sprint had been trying to contact me since then. They offered to settle for $60 which I (stupidly) agreed to. After that I got to thinking that something was wrong with this, so I did some searching online and found many others in this same situation. I called Sprint and gave them both the account number found on the collection letter for them, and my SSN. They could not find any account in my name ever. They also told me that this company Afni is not on their list of collection agencies. I also found it funny that this "debt" is not on my credit report.

Immediately I called Afni back, asked for a supervisor who told me that they would cancel the payment and I also asked that they not send me anymore letters and he said that they could do that but that ignoring it would not make it go away. I explained to him what I found out about Sprint and he said that they were liars and that they collect for them all the time.

This was earlier tonight so I'm not sure if the payment is still going to go through or not but I'm going to call the bank in the morning and find out how I can make sure no payments come through from them.

If you get a letter from Afni, it's FRAUD.
