Stole my $500 deposit!

I was planning on financing a house. I got in touch with Quicken and they told me I needed to put down a $500 deposit to secure my financing and to let them know I was serious. They said most of the deposit would go towards the appraisal. Anyways, a few days later I decided to back out of the purchase of the house - due to having to move out of state in the next 6 months. The appraisal was NEVER done. The only thing they did was run my credit application and get me pre-approved for the loan. Now, they are saying they will not refund my money! What a scam! I called many other lenders while I was shopping and none of them required a deposit. Yes, I was stupid to have gone with them in the first place but can someone tell me HOW the heck I get my money back!?!?
