Ripoff harassing letter stating a debt needed paid

I received a letter in the mail stating that i owed a lot of money for a collection from a phone company. I called that phone company and they had no record of me at all. I called merchants' and talked to a very very rude woman!!! She talked to me as though I am some dead beat woh never pays their bills. She said the debt was from 1998, she the wrong address down, and could not give me any more info than that. She wanted me to pay the whole debt right then and there!

I told her that the phone company had no record of this bill and she just kept saying my s.S. N and how this debt is attached to me and how it is my responsibility to pay it. Like i said she was so rude! I told her I wasn't paying anything until I found out what this was about. I told her that I was calling the phone company again to make sure that they had no outstanding bill from 1998, which they didnt, and she wanted me to call her back.

I looked merchants' up on the internet and found the usacomplaints.com site. I will not be calling her back! Should I send them a letter from the phone company or should i just ignore this? I am worried about my s.S. N and would like to know how they got that kind of info! Someone please help me! Thank you
