Lied regarding payoff on reposessed vehicle

Please beware of these people. They are a collection agency, NOT a law office, as stated on their letterhead.

I was contacted by them regarding a balance due on a car that had been reposessed. Granted, I did owe some money on the car, but, the person that contacted me told me that they would agree to a settlement. I gave them (stupid me!) my permission to withdraw the amount from my checking account in three payments. Then, after the last payment was made, I get a letter from them stating that I still owed them money.

I called the office, explained my problem, gave them the account number and was told that the payments had been made. I was then told that the gentleman (and I use this term loosely!) that I needed to speak with was not in yet. When I called back and spoke with the man that I had originally asked for, he informed me that he had never agreed to a settlement amount and told me to "play him back the tape where he had made any such statement".
