Claims that I owe a bill over three times the amount I borrowed ripoff

I am trying to clearup my credit report by takeing care of a past due credit card bill with HSBC. They have sold it to This Midamerica Credit Bureau. This account was paid in full by a mortgage company I refinanced my home with, I still have the check stub they paid to them. This company says that even though I paid $371 to bring this current I now owe them $633.41. How is this possible and how can I clean this up short of paying them off
